A TWIST OLIVER This year we decided to bring Charles Dickens’ beloved novel, Oliver Twist, to life.We decided to create an intimate theatre, immerse our audience and take them on a wild adventure through Victorian England. We adapted the stage play to our facilities and called it “A Twist of Oliver”. The story begins in an orphanage run by the intimidating Mr Bumble (Jason Fasanya) and his wife Muna Nwokoro). Young, orphaned Oliver Twist (Josua Essa and alternatively PriyeIsari) navigate the London’s underworld of theft and violence, searching for a home, a family, and – most importantly – for love. When Oliver is picked up on the street by a boy named the Artful Dodger (Marcus Higenyi), he is welcomed into a gang of child pickpockets led by the conniving, but charismatic, Fagin (Joseph Coco-Bassey). When Oliver is falsely accused of a theft he didn’t commit, he is rescued by a kind and wealthy gentleman (AwwalSaád), to the dismay of Fagin’s violent sidekick, Bill Sykes (Saadatu Tumsah. Caught in the middle is the warm-hearted Nancy(Mariam Zayed) and her friend Bet (Amy Ajie and Symphony Bidsah), who are trapped under Bill’s thumb, but desperate to help Oliver, with tragic results. With spirited, timeless songs like “Ompah,” “Food, Glorious Food,” and “Where is Love,” “A Twist of Oliver” was a musical classic. Comments from audiences attending the show ranged from “Outstanding” to “the best show we have seen in a school in Nigeria”. We certainly have talent at Abuja Prep!
