Introduction
The general principle, on which the School Rules are based, is that pupils should at all times, show respect for other people and the surroundings in which they have to live and work. Each pupil is a small part of a larger community, and the rules are made not for the convenience of each individual but for the good of the majority. Therefore all the rules below can be summarised in one GOLDEN RULE that should be followed by pupils and staff:

Respect for ourselves.”
Abuja Preparatory School strives to create a positive school climate where each child is encouraged to develop a love of learning in an inviting, respectful, and productive atmosphere. We recognize that learning and teaching will thrive in an atmosphere that is caring, orderly and safe. To that end, we are committed to establishing a pupil code of conduct that supports proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate pupil behaviors to create positive school environments. Teaching behavioral expectations and rewarding pupils for following them is part of a positive effective behaviour supports the approach that will help to establish a learning rich environment in which appropriate behaviour is the norm. The School believes creating a positive school climate is a process that includes all members of the school community.
The pupil code of conduct is based on guiding behaviour that shows respect for the rights, property, and safety of themselves and others. It is expected that school members will accept personal responsibility for their behavior in order to maintain a safe and productive learning environment. It is expected that school members will honour the rights of others through the process of learning and demonstrating appropriate behaviour in the context of social responsibility.
Showing Respect for other People
The following rules and code are very important: –
- A breach of good manners is a breach of School Rules.
- Pupils are expected to stand attentively when being addressed by staff member or another adult. Therefore pupils should not talk to a member of staff or other adult with their hands in their pockets, or while eating, or while lounging against a wall, etc.
- Pupils should be prompt to offer simple courtesies: e.g. help in the carrying of loads, opening doors for others, etc.
- Courtesy to members of staff includes non-teaching staff.
- Pupils must be silent when staff enter or leave any type of official gathering, and must be in order when a member of staff enters or leaves the classroom at the beginning or end of a lesson.
- Pupils are expected to keep silent in Assembly. At other times the level of noise or talking in a classroom or in another place obviously depends on the nature of the activity but if other people are being disturbed by the level of noise, then it is too high.
- Bad language is expressly forbidden.
Showing Respect for Yourself
Lack of care with personal presentation can send negative messages to other people. For this reason, we ask that students adhere to the school dress code at all times, ensure that their hair is clean and appropriately cut and that they come to school ‘well groomed’. Girls should tie up long hair
A school is a place that promotes responsibility, respect, civility and academic excellence in a safe learning and teaching environment.
All pupils, parents, teachers and staff have the right to be safe, and feel safe, in their school. With this right comes the responsibility to be law-abiding citizens and to be accountable for actions that put at risk the safety of others or oneself.
The School’s Code of Conduct sets clear standards of behaviour. It specifies the mandatory consequences for student actions that do not comply with these standards.
These standards of behaviour apply not only to pupils, but also to all individuals involved at Abuja Preparatory School – parents or guardians, volunteers, teachers and other staff members – whether they are on school property, on school busses or at school-authorized events or activities.
Standards of Behaviour
Respect, civility and responsible citizenship
All school members must:
- Respect and comply with all applicable national, provincial and municipal laws;
- Demonstrate honesty and integrity;
- Respect differences in people, their ideas and opinions;
- Treat one another with dignity and respect at all times, and especially when there is disagreement;
- Respect and treat others fairly, regardless of their ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, religion, race, gender, age or disability;
- Respect the rights of others;
- Show proper care and regard for school property and the property of others;
- Dress in a manner which reflects purpose and propriety;
- Take appropriate measures to help those in need;
- Respect persons who are in a position of authority;
- Respect the needs of others to work in an environment of learning and teaching.
Expectations for Pupils Learning and Behaviour
Teachers plan rules and procedures before the school year begins. Teachers set high standards for learning and let pupils know they are all expected to meet them. Standards are set so they are both challenging and attainable. A list of expectations and class rules (both academically and behavioural) is issued and discussed by the teacher in each class during the first days of school.
Policy on Uniform
Dress for school
Pupils at Abuja Prep are required to take pride in their appearance and be smartly dressed at all times. Unless there is a special occasion, pupils are required to wear the FULL Abuja Preparatory School uniform to school.

Pupils who wear items that contravene our school uniform will be required to remove the offending item or may be sent home to change. The Headmaster has the final say regarding the appropriateness of clothing.
- Art Clothes
Art is an important part of the school curriculum. While the art classes have aprons, parents may be requested to send an apron or better still, one of Dad’s old shirts to school, so that clothes are not spoilt by paint or any other art material.
- Hair
All pupils hair should be neat and tidy and should not be in a style that hinder their learning (e.g. covers their eyes) or draws undue attention to the child. The Headmaster has the final say on appropriate hairstyles and if deemed inappropriate, pupils will be required to change the style. Under no circumstances will hair extensions or dyed hair be permitted.
- Jewellery
No items of jewellery are permitted with the exception of watches and small studded ear rings for girls.
- Special occasions
On special occasions throughout the year the children may be required to come to school in clothes other than their school uniforms, such as traditional dress.
- Physical Education Kit
This must be brought to school on Mondays and remain until Friday. Swimming costumes must be brought to school on swimming days. Children without the correct clothing for sports
lessons may be excluded from activity.
- Name Tags on clothes
Parents must be responsible for ensuring all items of clothing brought to school are correctly marked. All names must be legible.
Code of dress
All pupils are expected to wear school uniform and to be properly dressed at all times. It is widely accepted that the reputation of a school is influenced in no small degree by the appearance of its pupils. Consequently, with the ultimate benefit of all pupils in mind, the School’s approach to uniform must be firm. Parents are requested to make sure that their children are properly turned out and to check that the uniform is worn correctly by other children during breaks and before and after school.
The following rules apply: –
- Pupils must travel to and from School in proper school uniform that must be worn in the correct manner.
- School rules apply when travelling to and from School.Pupils who arrive at School wearing incorrect uniform will be sent home to change.
- The wearing of make-up and jewellery is forbidden. Girls may wear simple studs (no rings or adorned ear-rings) if they have pierced ears.
- Long hair for boys is forbidden, as are extreme styles of haircut.In all cases the Headmaster’s decision is final.
- Girls with long hair should tie their hair up with a white ribbon or a ribbon in the school’s official colour. Hair extensions are prohibited
